The Chinese New Year started on January 23rd and continues on through February 6th, that’s 15 days of cultural fun and opportunity for plenty of fireworks. One of the biggest events to kick off the celebration took place in the streets of Beijing with all the colorful dancers and streamers you can imagine. One of the highlights of this ‘Year of the Dragon’ was the glittering firework display that shot up into the air and quickly transformed into the design of a swirling dragon. This amazing firework, especially designed to honor the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac, also featured multiple smaller dragons that sparkled and almost seemed to fly around the larger dragon centerpiece.
In Chinese culture, the Dragon is an auspicious creature that symbolizes power and excellence, valiancy and boldness, heroism and perseverance, nobility and divinity – a striking difference from the negative connotation that dragons have in the Western culture. In China, a dragon is energetic, decisive, optimistic, intelligent and ambitious and perseveres until any obstacles in the way are overcome. It’s no wonder that pyrotechnicians are busy creating fireworks that explode into the silhouette of dragons.
