Memorial Day is an important way to honor the brave men and women who have died in military service for the United States. The day was first enacted to pay tribute to the Union soldiers of the American Civil War and, after World War 1, was used as an umbrella observance for American military personnel who have died in any conflict. The bittersweet weekend is both a time of solemn remembrance for the fallen as well as a celebration of what America stands for. Memorial Day is also the harbinger of the busy summer season filled with festivals and events in every state of the Union.
