Today you might notice, more than usual, our nation’s flags unfurled and flying with pride from poles around the country. That’s because June 14th is Flag Day, an annual tribute to the “Red, White and Blue,” a beloved symbol of freedom. The concept for Flag Day actually came from a school teacher back in the late 19th century who felt like the “stars and stripes” needed a proper tribute from the students on the flag’s 108th birthday back in 1885. Hence, Flag Day was born (although not made an official “day” until a proclamation by then President Woodrow Wilson in 1949) and has been celebrated across the land with salutes, songs and sometimes even fireworks.
One quote from a Flag Day celebration at the turn of the 20th century really resonates with many citizens, including us folks here at AllSparkFireworks.com —  “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.” In many ways this allusion is what fireworks celebrate on the Fourth of July and in the weeks leading up to it. The displays of pyrotechnic compounds as they burst in the sky are, on just a literal level, just the products of chemistry reactions, similar to experiments you may have done in school But on a symbolic level, these same pyrotechnic displays reveal whatever we make of them as we watch, whether that be a feeling of patriotism, memories of a childhood past, or the excitement of possibility and opportunity afforded in this great land.
