Some of the best fireworks in Paris are on Bastille Day, July 14th. Darn, we missed it this year by a month! But, still we can reminisce and live in the memories of years past.
There are many ways to see this spectacular show of fireworks that lights up the sky over the glittering Eiffel Tower. The diehard masses (about a million of you) show up on the Champs de Mars or nearby Trocadero mid-morning to wait it out for a close-up view of the spectacle. If this is your plan, remember to bring along all the makings for a long, leisurely 12-hour wait – picnic blankets, chairs, Hors d’oeuvre and the requisite wine.
You can also watch the fireworks shot off over the Eiffel Tower from a place of elevation. Hike up the seemingly never-ending stars to La Basilique du Sacré Coeur in Montmartre, although a little further away, it’s still a breathtaking view and not quite as crowded – although still plenty of people. Another option is the flip through your contacts to see if any friends have a fabulous apartment nearer by and are hosting a Bastille Day party – offer to bring the champagne in return for an invitation!
A less-crowded option is in another arrondissements (district) of Paris — Montparnasse. Also up on a hill like Montmatre (hence the “mont” which means mountain in French), this local-flavor neighborhood offers decent views of the event with much less chaos.
