July 4 Fireworks

Even before the Revolutionary War was won, our fledgling nation began celebrating the prospect of being “a land of the free and the home of the brave” with festive fireworks. These explosive devices were invented in 12th century China and over the years made their way to the New World with some of America’s first settlers. Used to impress the natives and celebrate holidays, fireworks were very popular diversions in the colonies. During the first Independence Day celebration in 1777, a July 4 fireworks display was set off in honor of the United States – and the rest is history!

In the spirit of celebration, the fascination with these pyrotechnic elements continued to grow and by the 18th and 19th centuries, July 4 fireworks were common occurrences in cities around the country. Sure to make our forefather’s faces light up, the biggest July 4 fireworks show today is the “Macy’s 4th of July” celebration in New York City where more than 2 million live spectators and 12 million television viewers watch 40,000 fireworks shot off over the historic Hudson River. Other top July 4 firework shows include “Pops Concert at the Esplanade” in Boston, “Welcome America!” in Philadelphia, “Independence Day Celebration” in Washington, DC, “Freedom Over Texas” in Houston and more.

If you don’t feel like fighting the crowds for your July 4 fireworks fix, you can always set off your own pyrotechnics show in the backyard – law permitting! Impress family and friends with a rainbow array of colorful July 4 fireworks that will honor our great nation with a star-spangled salute.
