Fireworks in Louisville
Considered to be a gateway to the South, the city of Louisville, Kentucky has a welcoming ambiance and plenty arts, culture and outdoor activities for residents and guests to take part in. Of course, firework shows are always a favorite event on the calendar for everyone and, thank goodness, the city of Louisville boasts plenty of holidays, sporting events and festivals with fireworks as a featured attraction. Fireworks have become a great tradition for every generation in this northernmost Southern city (or southernmost Northern city, depending on how you look at it) in the good ole USA.
One of the premiere events in the town is the Kentucky Derby, the first of three annual thoroughbred horse races making up the Triple Crown. For firework fans, the event isn’t just about the fast horses and ladies in big hats; it’s also about the pyrotechnic shows, especially Thunder Over Louisville. This annual event is part of the opening ceremonies for the Kentucky Derby Festival, an explosive kick-off for the two week celebration in Louisville. Approximately half a million people visit the festival and the firework show, put on by Zambelli Internationale and Visual Presentations, is one of the largest annual pyrotechnics displays in North America. This massive show features nearly 60 tons of firework shells, 250 tons of launching tubes, and 2 million pounds of packing sand for the 1,800 feet of barges required to get the job done. Thunder Over Louisville is a firework display you have to see to believe!
For the Fourth of July, Louisville gets in the patriotic spirit with a number of festivals, fairs and firework shows. Some of the bigger ones include the Waterfront Independence Festival with plenty of room to spread out blankets on the Great Lawn. Also, the Zambelli Fireworks Extravaganza that takes place at the town’s minor league baseball franchise, the Louisville Bats is a super popular venue to have a major blast. Also, in Crescent Hill, there is an Old-Fashioned 4th of July celebration complete with a watermelon-eating contest and night-time firework show. Also, the Louisville Orchestra Independence Day Celebration is a great event where guests will enjoy patriotic music, including marches by John Philip Sousa and the "1812 Overture," will be blasted from the stage barge floating in the middle of the river.
For more than 30 years, Light Up Louisville has brought dazzling lights to the downtown area. The event features a holiday parade, a visit from Santa, seasonal music, charity toy collections and after the official tree lighting, a fabulous winter season firework show. Guests can even purchase tickets to take a Light Up Louisville cruise to enjoy the lights illuminating over the water. To wind down the holiday season and ring in the New Year, there are many firework shows across Louisville and surrounding areas that will put folks in a festive mood.
When heading out to Louisville, it’s always a smart idea to check in with your hotel concierge or the Louisville Visitor Center beforehand for firework watching opportunities that are on the calendar. Always on the pulse of what is happening all over the city, including firework shows, you’ll find quick and accurate information from these arts and entertainment resources. Kentucky, especially Louisville and the surrounding areas, are spectacular places to watch fireworks deck out the night sky. The fireworks here are amazingly beautiful; you will want to take lots of pictures to keep the memories forever.
