You’re certainly not alone in the Lone Star State if you love fireworks, and the capital of this fine state might just be the most celebrating town around. Austin, located in the heart of Texas, is home to the University of Texas, major high-tech organizations, outdoor enthusiasts and aficionados of all things weird. The unofficial city slogan is, after all, ‘Keep Austin Weird’ and there are plenty of festivals and other events in which fireworks add to the overall eclectic atmosphere. Plus, with great weather nearly all year ‘round, Austin is a prime spot for pyrotechnic enjoyment.
While Austin doesn’t have any major professional sports teams, they are super proud of the Longhorns at the University of Texas. When a school team has a victory, the iconic UT Tower is lit up in celebratory orange lights; also during the spring commencement the lit tower serves as a backdrop for a graduation firework show. Also, in neighboring Round Rock, a minor league baseball team and triple A affiliate for the Texas Rangers, the Round Rock Express, offers an opportunity to take in a game and even a special firework show after some of the games.

To ring in the New Year, the City of Austin produces Austin’s New Year (ANY) so that families and individuals can enjoy a non-alcohol, downtown New Year’s Eve experience. For the 4th of July there are typically a good number of firework shows in the Austin area, however in some years they have been canceled due to drought conditions. Perhaps the most well-known and largest Independence Day celebration in Austin is held at Auditorium Shores at The Long Center. More than 100,000 residents and visitors will come down to the banks of Lady Bird Lake (actually the Colorado River) to see the Austin Symphony perform patriotic music, including the 1812 Overture complete with cannons shot off by the Texas National Guard Salute Battery. Afterward, fireworks light up the sky and illuminate the water and can enjoyed from miles away if in the right spot.
Another waterfront spot for fireworks in Austin is at Volente Beach, a water park on Lade Travis. This firework event features live music and a firework show that starts at dusk. The town of Lakeway, near Austin, also has a complete July 4th celebration with a parade, food, entertainment and a night-time firework extravaganza.
Austin is a town known for their live music and high-tech flavor, that’s why the town is a perfect host for the South By Southwest festival every spring which includes music, film and interactive entertainment. Some of the live shows have been known to incorporate fireworks into the event either on stage or as a stand alone event. In the same vein, the Austin City Limits (ACL) festival is a cornucopia of live music that hits the town, Zilker Park specifically, every fall and also has been known to spark a firework or two.
